Installation Guide

Installation Guide

Everything you need to install your Off The Wall Prints mural, sticker pack or wall decal — beautifully, the first time, with no tools, no tape and no installer required.

What you'll receive

Every order from Off The Wall Prints — mural or decal — ships with the same care:

  • Made-to-order in Australia. Murals are printed and trimmed to your specific wall dimensions. Decals are pre-cut and ready to peel.
  • Numbered sequencing. Mural panels arrive in install order — Panel 1, Panel 2, Panel 3, left to right. Decals arrive grouped by element on their original sheets.
  • Care card. A small printed card with material, install and care notes (the same content as this guide).

Material — what your decal is made of

Every Off The Wall Prints product is printed on the same substrate:

  • Premium PVC-free polyester wallcovering, 240 g/m²
  • Woven texture, matte finish — no shine, photographs beautifully
  • Fire-rated, recyclable, no off-gassing — safe in nurseries and shared spaces
  • Repositionable adhesive — lift, slide, re-stick. Won't damage paint when removed.

Before you start

You don't need tools, but a few minutes of prep makes the whole job easier.

  1. Clean wall. Wipe the wall with a soft, dry cloth. Skip anything wet or chemical — fresh paint smudges, soap residue stops the adhesive sticking. For freshly painted walls, wait 4 weeks before installing.
  2. Smooth surface. Best results on flat, matte or eggshell paint. Heavy textures, gloss paints, freshly wallpapered walls and unsealed plaster all reduce stick.
  3. Room temperature. Install between 15–25°C. Too cold and the adhesive stiffens; too warm and it can over-grip.
  4. Lay out the kit. Open the carton and lay each panel or sheet flat for 10–15 minutes so it relaxes from rolling.

Installing a Mural

Murals arrive as numbered panels — typically 4–6 panels per wall depending on size. Each panel is the full wall-height by approximately 720mm wide.

The Pro-Install System

Three things make our murals dramatically easier than traditional wallpaper:

  • Repositionable surface — peel the panel back, realign, re-stick. Up to 10 repositions before the adhesive starts to lose grip.
  • Back-Slit Technology — the backing is pre-slit so panels sit flat on the wall without you needing to peel the full sheet at once. Peel a strip, smooth, peel the next strip.
  • Numbered sequencing — every panel is labelled with its position. Panel 1 goes left, last panel goes right.

Step by step

  1. Find your starting line. Lightly mark a vertical pencil line on the wall where Panel 1's left edge will sit. Use a level or a long ruler — even a slight off-vertical multiplies across the wall.
  2. Hang Panel 1. Peel the top corner of the backing back about 20cm. Align the top-left of the panel with your pencil line. Press the top edge to the wall.
  3. Work down. Peel the next strip of backing, smooth the panel onto the wall using a clean dry cloth, working from the centre outward to avoid air bubbles. Continue down to the floor.
  4. Hang Panel 2. Same process — align its left edge with the right edge of Panel 1, edge-to-edge (no overlap). The artwork is designed to match seam-to-seam.
  5. Continue. Through Panel 3, 4, etc. until the wall is complete.
  6. Trim. Any excess at the top, bottom or sides — score gently with a craft knife along the wall/skirting/ceiling edge and lift the excess away.

Fixing common issues

  • Air bubble. Lift the nearest edge slightly and smooth the bubble outward with a dry cloth. Most bubbles vanish completely within 24 hours as the adhesive settles.
  • Misaligned seam. Lift the panel from its top corner and slide. The repositionable adhesive lets you nudge millimetres at a time.
  • Crease. Peel the panel back to before the crease, smooth flat, re-apply. Light creases will relax overnight.

Installing Wall Stickers & Decal Sheets

Wall stickers are individual decals on a backing sheet. Sticker packs and Accent Collections are multiple smaller pieces on one shared sheet.

  1. Plan placement. Hold the sheet against the wall before peeling — try a few positions to find what looks right. Use small pieces of removable tape to test if needed.
  2. Peel from a corner. Slowly peel the backing back from one corner. Don't rip — slow and steady prevents tearing.
  3. Apply top edge first. Press the top edge of the decal to the wall, then smooth down and outward with a clean dry cloth. Air bubbles? Lift and re-smooth.
  4. For sheets with multiple elements, peel each piece individually rather than the whole sheet at once.
  5. Reposition. If you don't love the placement, lift gently from a corner and reposition. The adhesive tolerates up to 10 lifts before it weakens.

Care & longevity

  • Cleaning. Spot-clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not scrub. Avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners and steam.
  • Sunlight. Indirect daylight is fine. Direct, prolonged sun will fade colours faster — same as any printed artwork. Position out of direct afternoon sun where possible.
  • Humidity. Indoor humidity (40–60%) is ideal. Bathrooms with constant steam are not recommended.
  • Longevity. Murals will look new for 7+ years with normal indoor conditions. Stickers and decals are designed for the same lifespan but can also be peeled off and re-applied multiple times.

Removing a mural or decal

Our decals are removable — designed to come off cleanly when you're done.

  1. Start at a corner. Lift gently with a fingernail or a soft plastic spatula.
  2. Peel slowly at a low angle. Aim to peel back toward yourself at roughly 45°, not straight off the wall.
  3. If adhesive resists, warm the panel slightly with a hairdryer on low. The adhesive softens with gentle heat.
  4. Residue. Should be minimal. Anything left can be lifted with a damp cloth — no solvents needed.
